The great sense question: Why do we actually?

Dear reader, dear reader,
do you remember the question: "And what do you do for a living?" She was often the first sentence in a conversation – and the answer is decided about how we have to ourselves and to others are assessed. The profession's identity, Status, and history all in one.

Today, this model begins to falter. More and more people feel it: A good salary alone is not. The question that hovers over the new world of work, is: What happens when work creates a sense of identity, but by meaning, values, and effect is defined?

The contrast: When work is everything

A view to East Asia shows how different work can be understood. In Japan and South Korea 60 in some sectors - to 70-hour weeks are not uncommon, but an Ideal, a Symbol of devotion, loyalty, and success. The term "Karoshi" (death from Overwork) is there for extreme work load, and is known to be.

In these cultures, the work is closely connected with the membership of the organization, and the social position. It creates a sense of identity to such an extent that in many Western countries increasingly behind. While there, the collective and the company's loyalty stand in the centre, to grow the desire individual development, freedom and sense.

Meaning in work: Trend or real change?

Europe and North America will experience a profound change. People quit well-paying Jobs in order to pursue a new, reduce working hours or change in occupations with more sense and less Status. The Trend of the "Great Resignation" shows how strong the desire for meaning is now: millions left their Jobs, often out of inner Emptiness instead of external pressure.

Studies by McKinsey, make it clear that employee retention and satisfaction increase significantly if people understand the meaning of their work and experience. It is not just the "What" (the tasks), but especially to the "Why" (contribution, impact, values).

At the same time, demographic shifts the balance of power: In many industries, skill shortages exist, the workforces are older. Anyone with good skills, able to clearly self-conscious and demands of employers Purpose, development, flexibility, and a people-friendly culture.

Your compass to a meaningful world of work

What does this mean for you specifically? Here is a practical compass for the new reality:

  • 1. Sense-Check for your Job
Take time for honest questions: What do you get up in the morning? What are your values reflected in your work? Where do you feel the energy of empty space? As a Supplement to your article on mental orientation fits very well:

  • 3. Work-Life Fusion instead of Work-Life-spasm
The old dream of the perfect Work-Life Balance can seem like a myth. More exciting is the question: How can you work and life are interwoven, that they reinforce each other? It is a structured way to reflect your load and Balance, you can find here:
    → S. P. A. L. T. E. N. method – an effective tool
  • 4. Future skills instead of routine fall
Routine tasks are increasingly being automated or AI supported. The more important skills such as creativity, problem-solving, communication, and critical Thinking. In your Blog posts, for example, to creativity and methods can be found.
  • 5. Sense outside of work life
Work is important, but it must not be the sole vehicle of Meaning in your life. Involvement in the arts, volunteering, education or personal projects opened up new spaces of Identity. An impression of your own artistic-conceptual page on your artist page:

Who are you, if your Job is eliminated?

The question is, what happens if work is your most important identity anchors, can be unsettling. Suddenly, the greater, the deeper question is: Who are you – beyond your Job title?

Right here is a tremendous opportunity: You can use your self-image, wide set – on relationships, values, passions, creativity and contribution to society. The future of work does not force us to play professional roles, but us as a whole person.

Conclusion: More than just a Job – an invitation to a rethinking

The world of work is in a phase of historical change. The focus shifts from a pure income Meaning in the work, personal development and real humanity. This is a challenge and a gift at the same time: You can play your role to re-define – conscious, courageous, consistent with yourself.

How do you see it? You feel in your Job, sense – or rather Empty?
Write down your thoughts and experiences in the comments. Your perspective is what makes this discussion alive and maybe your comment will for someone else, the impetus to go to the next step.

Sincerely,
your Roland
